Build Confidence & Self-Esteem with
Theater Classes for Kids
Are you looking for theater classes for kids where your children can learn, grow & improve their communication skills? StagePlay Learning, located in Edwardsville, IL, just 30 minutes from downtown St. Louis, Mo, offers spring and fall theater classes, classes that meet requirements for Illinois homeschooling, and summer theater camps for girls and boys in Pre-K through 5th grade.
From the very first class, students are taught valuable life skills using theater skills taught by our team of talented educators. Through creative play in themed theater classes and camps, students will build confidence and positive self-esteem that they will carry with them through every aspect of their lives, both on and off stage.
Theater Classes that Build Confidence
Each of StagePlay Learning’s theater classes focus on building confidence for our students through writing, speaking and performance activities. Fall 2025 brings an exciting new restructuring of our StagePlay Learning programming and curriculum. This Fall, our 12-week sessions will feature stories and explore the world of Dr. Seuss! Each week, we’ll introduce classes focused on various Dr. Seuss stories, themes and characters.
This updated curriculum offers the opportunity for children Pre-Kindergarten to 2nd grade to focus on whimsical and imaginary play, sparking creativity. Students may enhance and improve social skills while building confidence in a safe and collaborative environment. Students are encouraged to think outside the box through role play games, improv scenarios and performance on the stage.
Using these same Dr. Seuss stories and themes, 3rd to 5th grade participants may experiment with character voice work, learn and implement character development and delve into the art of storytelling. Additionally, students are taught how to perform in front of their peers and receive direction to help for future auditions. When students are taught these skill sets at a young age, it helps prepare them for better academic performance in school, step into leadership roles and feel more confident around their peers and in group activities.
At the conclusion of each 12-week session, parents will be invited to experience the world of Dr. Seuss with their student at an Open House. Details will be shared with participants and their families!

The Benefits Theater Classes Offer Kids
As we all know, growing up can be challenging, but what if we could offer kids a way to learn joyous and confident self-expression through a bigger use of their imaginations? Theater allows kids to put themselves “in the shoes” of another, allowing them to learn empathy and compassion for others. StagePlay Learning’s classes teach children to use facial expressions, voice and tone, and body language to relate to the characters they are playing, which brings with it creative play, humor, and laughter. This process teaches them to trust themselves, which, in turn, builds tremendous confidence and communication skills. Working in a group environment allows kids to learn teamwork and develop leadership skills and helps with critical thinking and problem-solving through the stories they are helping to tell.
The Academic Benefits of Performing Arts
According to Scholastic, you might be surprised to learn that researchers have found that children who engage in creative play like singing, dancing, acting, and performing are four times more likely to be recognized for their academic achievement versus their non-theater counterparts. Moreover, Parents Magazine stated in 2022 that students who participated in the SAT who had participated in theater scored 65 points more on average due to increased ability in reading comprehension, greater concentration, and increased motivation to learn.
